Lisbon is wonderful for a couple on a city break. For ten or twenty people travelling together, the north of Portugal often makes more sense. Here is why, side by side.
Space
In a capital, a big group usually means several apartments in different streets or a hotel where everyone meets in the lobby. In the north, it is easy to find a private quinta where each family has its own house and the group shares the garden. At Quinta dos Ferrage in Amares, every house is booked whole, with its own kitchen and barbecue, on a fenced property of two hectares.
Distances
Porto airport is about an hour's drive from the quinta. From there, Braga is twenty minutes away, Guimarães around forty and the Gerês national park just over half an hour to its nearest lake. Lisbon, by comparison, is more than four hours south by car.
Culture
Porto was named Europe's leading city cultural destination at the World Travel Awards 2026, the same year Portugal was named Europe's leading destination. Braga, founded by the Romans as Bracara Augusta, has one of the oldest cathedrals in the country and the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019.
Nature
Peneda-Gerês is Portugal's only national park. Waterfalls, oak forests, a Roman road and reservoirs for summer swimming are all within an easy morning's drive.
Pace
The north runs on long lunches and quiet evenings. For groups that is the point. Nobody needs to be entertained, and the best moments tend to happen around a table.
A good group holiday is less about the programme and more about having room to be together and room to be apart.
Seasons
Summer is green rather than parched, autumn brings the grape harvest and chestnuts, and winter is the season for fireplaces. The Minho is one of the rainier parts of Portugal, which is exactly why it stays so green.
